This is totally random, but South Park just released a new Episode with a very interesting and unique television portrayal of Asian Americans. South Park, for those who don’t know, is a satiric and very often edgy animated television show focusing on elementary school children in Colorado. In the most recent episode, “Tweek x Craig,” the show proposes that it is Asian Americans, specifically Japanese Americans who decide who is “strait or gay.” The children in the television show are confused after being exposed to “Yaoi” which begins their journey though adolescent sexual frustration. Japanese for “Boy’s Love,” “Yaoi” is art romanticizing a fictional relationship between two boys.
In the real world, many actual “Yaoi” works were made portraying a relationship between two South Park characters: Tweek and Craig, so the show-runners decided to go with the idea and give it the classic South Park spin. Now, in the South Park universe, Japanese American girls drawing Yaoi decide the characters sexual orientations. I, for the life of me, can not tell if this is hilarious, offensive or just a plain unique portrayal of Asian Americans in the media. Whatever it is, it made me laugh and I wanted to share it! Below is the link to watch the full episode online and a few funny pieces of artwork! I’m curious what everyone thinks about this!
